Bold Conversation with Jason Franklin
Thursday, February 16, 2012 ♦ 12:00pm
Via Teleconference

What would you do if you got an unexpected invitation to get involved in your family's foundation...which you didn't know even existed? For Jason Franklin, it began a life-altering shift from life as a policy wonk to donor organizer. As he connected with communities serving young inheritors and progressive donors, Jason found other grantmakers interested in supporting social change and LGBTQ rights. He began asking hard questions about his philanthropy - what his priorities were and how much he should give? He turned to Bolder Giving's co-founders, Anne and Christopher Ellinger, to help him find answers. Now, Jason gives away 25% of his annual income plus gifts from his family foundation and his time. The unexpected invitation to join his family foundation led him on a journey towards recognizing his talents as a donor organizer and eventually to becoming Bolder Givings Executive Director.

Human Rights Watch Luncheon with Consuelo Morales and Nik Steinberg hosted by HIP
Thursday, November 17, 2011 ♦ 12:00pm-1:30pm
HIP Headquarters, 55 Second St. Suite 1500, San Francisco, CA

Calling all philanthropists and human rights activists in the Bay Area! If you have an interest in human rights in Mexico and the Americas, you won't want to miss out on this opportunity to meet with Consuelo Morales, this years' Human Rights Watch Voices for Justice Honoree. Sister Consuelo Morales works in Mexico to defend victims of human rights violations and hold their abusers accountable.

After years working with indigenous communities in Veracruz and street children in Mexico City, Morales returned to her native city of Monterrey in 1992 to find a community rife with abuses but without a human rights organization. She helped found Citizens in Support of Human Rights (Ciudadanos en Apoyo de Derechos Humanos, CADHAC) to fill that void and has led it ever since. Over nearly two decades, CADHAC has addressed a wide range of serious human rights problems in Nuevo Leon, from abuse in state-run orphanages to the forced displacement of people from their lands. Nik Steinberg is the current researcher assigned to Mexico and Cuba in the Human Rights Watch Americas Division. To view pictures of this event please click here.

Webinar
HIP Philanthropy Lab: The 2010 Census - What the Numbers Mean and How Funders Can Respond
Monday, October 03, 2011 ♦ 2:00pm-3:30pm
Webinar

It's well-known that the new Census shows tremendous growth of the Hispanic population — a 43 percent increase, reaching a total of 50.5 million. But what's the story behind the numbers, and what does it mean for funders? In some states, especially in the South, the Latino population has more than doubled. How can funders support these fast-growing Latino communities, where the Latino nonprofit sector is often relatively small or nascent? In California and four Southwestern states, more than one in four residents is Latino, including 40 percent or more of all children. With these changes showing potential for both increased Latino political power and increased xenophobia, how can funders respond?

Learn what the numbers mean and what funders are doing nationwide from this discussion with demographer Leo Estrada, Associate Professor at UCLA, and a panel of local and national funders including Tara Sandercock, HIP board member and Vice President of The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro; and Cristóbal J. Alex, Program Officer for Democratic Participation at The Ford Foundation.
