California Health Leaders Project

Building the Capacity of California Latino Health Organizations

About the Program

HIP’s California Health Leaders Project builds the capacity of nonprofit organizations that promote healthy Latino communities in California. In early 2011, HIP awarded $165,000 in capacity-building grants to 11 nonprofits. Gramts range from $8,000 to $16,000 and from one to two years.  Grants were awarded to build organizational capacity in areas including fundraising, financial management, and strategic planning.

HIP also holds convenings to provide specialized training as well as opportunities for grantees to build connections, learn from their peers, and share best practices. Training topics covered to date include organizational effectiveness, building relationships with institutional funders, developing an individual donor base, effective organizational storytelling, and engaging the board in fundraising.

The funded organizations’ programs focus on preventing and alleviating many of the most important health challenges Latinos face, including cancer and diabetes.  Many grantees provide client education, empower people with information, and help patients navigate complex healthcare systems.  Others use advocacy to provide leadership, build coalitions, and push for needed policy reforms.

Funding Partners

The California Health Leaders Project is made possible by the support of The California Wellness Foundation, whose mission is to improve the health of the people of California by making grants for health promotion, wellness education and disease prevention. The California Wellness Foundation works to address the particular health needs of traditionally underserved populations; to support and strengthen nonprofit organizations that seek to improve the health of underserved populations; to recognize and encourage leaders who are working to increase health and wellness within their communities; and to inform policymakers and opinion leaders about important wellness and health care issues.
