Latino Aging Initiative

Preparing the Nation for the Latino Age Wave

About the Program

In 2011, through a grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies, HIP launched the Latino Age Wave Initiative, which strengthens Latino aging programs and advocacy efforts in key states where the Latino older adult population is large and growing.  Specifically, the initiative works toward these objectives:

  • Raise awareness and support for Latino aging issues among key stakeholders including funders, policy-makers, and institutional and community leaders.
  • Increase the net amount of philanthropic dollars flowing to Latino aging issues.
  • Expand and improve programs and advocacy efforts that address aging issues in Latino communities.
  • Engage more Latino older adults as advocates for policies that improve the economic health and well-being of Latino elders.

The first site of the initiative is Colorado, which launches in late 2011 through a partnership with the Rose Community Foundation and the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado. HIP is currently exploring the development of one to two additional sites, with a focus on other states that have a large population of Latino elders, such as California, Florida, and New York.

The Latino Age Wave Initiative draws upon the promising practices, gaps, and recommendations identified in HIP’s recent Latino Age Wave report:

One purpose of the initiative is to pilot philanthropic strategies for responding to the coming Latino age wave and the nation’s increasingly diverse population of older adults.  For more about why HIP believes that Latino aging issues are an essential part of social justice for Latino communities, visit our issues page Aging: Why We Care.

Funding Partners

The Latino Age Wave Initiative is made possible by The Atlantic Philanthropies, which provided support for assessment and planning as well as national matching dollars to leverage contributions from local funders participating in the program.

In Colorado, the first site of the initiative, HIP is working in partnership with the Rose Community Foundation and the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado. The Rose Community Foundation has been a leading funder for both aging issues and Latino communities in the greater Denver area, including another partnership with HIP to establish and build the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado, which is housed with Rose.

Increasing Diversity

Strengthening Our Culture

"The HIP Collaborative has helped in many ways over the past 10 years. It spurred us to recruit the first Latina foundation board member in the state and helped us develop relationships that have led to establishing several funds advised by Latinos. Our association with HIP has helped to strengthen our cultural competence as an organization."

A Consistent Vision

"In the late '90s, the HIP board said, 'Getting more Latinos into the field just isn't enough-we need a new strategy for increasing giving to Latinos.' The result was the Funders' Collaborative, which proved incredibly effective — we raised more than $40 million for Latino community-based organizations."
